Winter is finally here and the cold temps have come with it. If you’re looking for ways to keep warm that aren’t about spending more money to turn the heating system up, we’ve got you covered with these tips. Try them out and you can save a little bit of your post-holidays cash while still staying comfortable.

Add a Layer of Clothing

Keeping warm doesn’t have to mean bundling up to the point where you can no longer move your arms. Thin layers are best for maintaining a comfortable temperature. Try wearing a camisole tank top under your shirt, or some thin leggings under your pants. If your toes often get cold, try a thicker style of sock or ones made from wool.

Cook Dinner in the Oven

Turning on the oven has always been a great way to warm up the house without increasing your utility bills. Ask your extended family, friends, or coworkers for some of their favorite recipes and try them out at home. You may find a new favorite for your dinner rotation and you’ll stay warm while doing it!

Open All the Vents

For the rooms in your home that you use most often, make sure the HVAC air vents are all the way open and unobstructed. Moving furniture away from these vents allows them to better circulate the warm air in the room. You can double-down on these efforts by closing the vents to rooms you’re not in very much, like guest bedrooms and bathrooms once the holidays are over.

Replace Air Filters

Most experts recommend that you change your HVAC system’s air filters every quarter. However, during the winter when your heating system is in constant use, it’s better to change them every month. When the filters get clogged with debris, it’s harder for your system to circulate air and keep it clean for you to breathe. If you have pets that shed, it’s especially important to keep up with air filter maintenance.

Use Hot Water Bottles

Hot water bottles are an inexpensive and effective way to add a little extra warmth. You simply fill them up, pop them in the microwave, and you’re good to go! Try placing one under the covers at the foot of your bed while you sleep, or in your lap when you’re sitting on the couch or at your desk. The heat coming off the bottle will help to warm your body so you don’t have to overwork your heating system or deal with being chilly all winter long.
