Common HVAC Problems in Winter

It’s well known that most HVAC problems don’t appear until the coldest days of winter or hottest days of summer. When the temperatures start to dip below freezing, we see a spike in calls for emergency service. Many of the calls we receive will tend to be about similar issues. If you’re experiencing any of the below HVAC problems, please give us a call!

Uneven Air Temperature

Closing the vents to infrequently used rooms can help direct the heat you’re paying for into the places you use the most. However, if you have not closed the vents and still find a particular room to be colder than others, you may have clogged ductwork. Schedule a cleaning appointment and that should solve the issue.

If the ducts are not clogged, you may have gaps or loose seals around your windows and doors. Add weather stripping or caulk to fill in these holes and ensure a tight seal. This helps keep the cold air out and the warm air in.

Clogged Filters

Most homes need to change their HVAC filters once every three months. Homes with pets or those with allergies should replace their filters every month. Without this frequent change, the filters can become clogged with dust, dirt, hair, and other debris. When the filters are blocked, they will not let air flow through your house as easily, therefore making it cooler than you’d like.

Malfunctioning Heat Pump

If you have an exterior heat pump, you need to be on the lookout for snow, ice, and cold winds. These elements can damage the fan motors and coils by covering them in frost. Using the automatic defrost setting can melt away the ice before it becomes a problem. If this setting is broken, you’ll need to keep the pump defrosted yourself until it can be fixed.

Broken Pilot Light

In some cases, cold and uncomfortable temperatures can come from the pilot light. Some heaters will only work at their fullest after the light turns on. If the light is dim or nonexistent, your HVAC unit may not be keeping your home very warm. This is commonly caused by a dirty or damaged flame sensor. This will need to be properly cleaned to ensure your heater functions well.

Broken Thermostat

If you can’t seem to locate the source of your problem within the HVAC unit, ducts, or other items mentioned above, the issue you’re experiencing could be due to a broken thermostat. An older unit may have faulty wiring that needs to be repaired. If your thermostat is very old, upgrading to a newer model can help better control the air flow and temperature, making your home more energy efficient.
